Wondering about advice on flying to Piedmonte from Northwest. Turin or Milan? Favorite airline for this particular trip? Any tips on how NOT to go? Thanks to all. Martin
Milan has better connection and prices than Turin. A scan of May shows prices as low as just under $1000, but with ugly connections going over. The best requiring an overnight stay in NYC on the way over. A "decent" connection is $1125. That's on Delta.
You could fly from SEA to TRN with Air France/Delta codeshare with one stop in Paris CDG. Another possibility is Lufthansa/United codeshare with one stop in Frankfurt (FRA). Those would be the most convenient and fastest options. From the West coast I like to fly straight to Europe without going through the Eastern US. It saves a lot of time and aggravation to avoid the East US. However compare the same options to Milan Malpensa (MXP) instead of TRN. As mentioned above prices to MXP are likely lower and MXP is practically on the border with Piemonte and closer to Novara (in Piemonte) than to Milan.
We have done the Lufthansa route Roberto mentions several times and it is nice. Our last trip we went via British Airways which had a convenient departure time from Seattle for my schedule and a slightly than average later departure from Italy which can be very convenient. I would also 2nd Roberto's suggestion of changing in Europe.. If check the options, there is often quite a few hours less travel times (from Seattle) by going over the top and changing in London, Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam.
Martin, I'd also suggest using MXP as it's a larger airport and has a greater seleçtion of flights. It would help to know where you plan on travelling in Piemonte? Cheers!
Ken - our current plan is to stay 3 nights in Alba at the La Terrazza Sulle Torri B&B next October 3, 4 & 5. The donkey Palio races are on the 5th, so that should be fun. Then on the 6th off to stay in an apartment at the Pecchenino winery in Monforte 'd Alba for 4 nights to allow some serious village hopping. Then we will stay 2 nights in Turin if we fly back from there. If we end up going out of Milan, then those 2 days are up in the air.
Martin, Thanks for the additional information. Torino would be a bit closer but either the availability or cost of flights could be the deciding factor. Either city provides easy rail transport to Alba. As you plan on doing some "serious village hopping", I assume you'll be renting a car at some point? Renting in or near Alba would probably be the method I'd choose, so that there would be no parking charges during the stay in Alba (where you won't need a car). Be sure to consider the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy. Good luck with your planning!
