We are traveling to Italy and are looking at what city to fly into for a trip that begins in Bolzano. Venice, Innsbruck and Milan are some possibilities. Any suggestions to make getting to our destination the least complicated?
The trip starts in Bolzano but where does it end? That might change the equation.
The closest international airports are Verona VRN or Innsbruck INN
The simplest way (one layover only) from SEA is:
For VRN:
Lufthansa(and partner Air Dolomiti) via FRA (or MUC)
Air Lingus: via DUB
Air France: via CDG (seasonal summer only)
For INN:
Same as above, except for Air Lingus, which does not fly to INN. Also only FRA is available (not MUC), with Air Dolomiti.
Venice VCE and Milan MXP (and also Bologna BLQ, which is not any farther) are a bit farther, but offer a few more options for one connection flight from SEA (for example with British via LHR) compared to VRN or INN, which are smaller airports.
I would consider also flying to Munich, MUC. From there you have just a short ride on local train and then train going to Bolzano in 4 hours. I do not believe flying to Milan or Venice would be quicker.
The point is that there are nonstops from Seattle to Munich, although not every day, operated by Lufthansa.
We went into Venice, spent a few nights there, flew out if Milan. Worked well for us. Either is a good part of the day getting to Bolzano. If the ultimate destination is up in the Dolomites, I'd look at Munich with a direct from the airport flixbus connection.
Thank you everyone.
