I am almost ready to purchase seats for the freccia and IC trains on the Trenitalia website, but where do I reserve seats? I keep hearing that you must reserve seats, but how to do this isn't explained clearly. Also, does anyone have any experience using a Travelex prepaid credit/debit card in Euros? Thanks
Hi,
after you put in your days etc it comes up with a list of trains. You click on the chosen time and it opens up with the ticket options. At the bottom of the ticket options is the option to select seat. just check that box before clicking on continue.
Freccia tickets (I believe also IC tickets but I do not remember) are issued for a specific train, at a specific date and time, with specific seats and so include a reservation. You do not have to buy it separately. If you miss the train, the ticket is no more valid - more expensive tickets may be changed in advance, discounted ticket cannot be changed.
You may ask to have a somewhat limited choice between some available places or to have a place as near as possible to a previously bought tickets; if you do not select these options, the system assigns you automatically a seat.
We do not recommend using a Travelex prepaid card because of the extra fees and expense. Your home-based credit and debit cards should work fine for travel in Italy. Use the debit card (not credit card) to withdraw cash from ATMS; many smaller businesses do prefer cash. See also http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/money.
denise,
The tickets you purchase for the Freccia and InterCity trains will include the compulsory seat reservations. Note that these are specific to ONE train, date and departure time and can ONLY be used on the one train listed on the ticket. The ticket will also specify your assigned Car (Carrozza) and Seat (Posti) numbers.
Regarding the Travelex cards, I agree with Laura. That type of product is often not a good choice as the consumer gets nicked with poor exchange rates, high fees or whatever.
Thank you all for your help. I will be traveling with my friend for 12 days- we're both on the other side of 60. I 'be been planning this trip since last summer & so much want things to go smoothly.
