I'm thinking of a trip to Rome in late November or December, and was hoping to be able to have those delicious carciofi alla giuida.
But given the emphasis on seasonal veggies, is that an impossibility at that time of year? What is in season then?
Here is a useful article: https://whyitalians.com/seasonal-italian-fruits-and-vegetables-list/#november-seasonal-fruits-and-vegetables-in-italy
Artichokes are in season in the Spring, especially March and April. Delicious whether alla giudia or alla romana. Buon appetito!
Grazie mille for that article! I agree that artichokes are delicious any way they are cooked, but the memory of the crispy ones alla giuida have lingered since my last visit to Rome. And it looks like they should be available, which is wonderful.
One of my favorites in Italy at that time of year is puntarelle, a type of chicory sprout served raw in a rich dressing of anchovies, olive oil, garlic and lemon juice or white wine vinegar. Also, chicoria ripassata which is rather like spinach, sautéed in olive oil with garlic and red pepper flakes.
I do enjoy both carciofi dishes, but alla giudia is by far my favorite. Who knew?
Seconding the recommendation for puntarelle. It is delicious! The Romans also eat a lot of pumpkin, which I don't particularly care for, but you might try it.
