My husband and I will be in SIcily for one week, late May.
Looking for a quaint seaside town for two nights before our flight put of Catania back to Rome.
We have stayed in Taromina before and would like to try something new.
I had Acireale on my to-visit list last year but didn't get there. Someone who did go, said it was very nice. I don't know whether it qualifies as "quaint". I loved Ortygia, the oldest part of Siracusa. but it's over 60 km. south of Catania, not in the area you specified. The city as a whole is rather large and thus probably not what you're looking for.
Check out Girodoni(?) Naxos, which is below Taromina and might fit your criteria. Nice seafront restaurants and about an hour to the airport if you have a car. Have stayed at a fantastic Hilton there 3 times. Right on the coast.
We stayed in a nice beach front hotel in Giardini Naxos so I agree with the previous poster. I'm not sure I would characterize the town as 'quaint', but it's a nice place to stay with a really nice beach and some nice restaurants. It's a popular resort town with pretty easy access to Taormina. I think it may be a bit quieter in May than it is in July/Aug when it is pretty crowded with the 'beach' crowd. The name means garden and there were definitely lots of gorgeous flowers everywhere.
EDIT: I checked and we stayed at the Ramada Hotel.
Giardini Naxos is good.
Check this place.
Amazing value for €75. In front of the beach. I liked it.
They have a garage a block away, in case you have a car.
Thanks for all the feedback. We were looking at Acireale or Aci Trezza. Will check out the other suggestion as well. BTW, we will have a car. We prefer smaller towns with good local food.
Roberto, I think you recommended Scopello last year. We loved it! Thanks!
