Searching for Rosticceria San Bartolomeo

Reading the Venice book, my wife and I found the description of Rosticceria San Bartolomeo interesting, so headed there for dinner, despite Yelp and Google Maps claiming that it was nowhere near where the Rick Steves map specified.

We didn't find it.

Anyone know where it really is? Is it where Yelp thinks? Is it where Google thinks?

In addition to not being where Rick thinks, it appears to be neither where TripAdvisor thinks nor where the Disney Store shop clerk thinks. sigh.

Or try the foursquare route. https://foursquare.com/v/rosticceria-san-bartolomeo-venezia-veneto/4c44464f429a0f474f73481e Just on the San Marco side of the Rialto bridge off Salizada Pio X, 2 calles in at Campo San Bartolomeo. Find the church and you have most of the battle won. Taht's how its done in Venice.

At San Marco 5424. Within a single sestiere there is one set of numbers. Each calle or rio does not have its own numbers, and they may look chaotic, but if you get to a close number you are probably nearly there.

BTW - I've never looked for or know the place you are looking for - I just have a fair bit of Venice knowledge and a fair idea of how things are put together.

Good luck. Be sure to write if it was tasty...

If it is the place I am thinking of, we walked by it every day last October, going to and from our apartment at San Lio. Rick's map in the 2013 Venice book does not locate it properly, but his directions should get you there. If you cannot imagine the statue walking backwards and turning left, try this: as you enter Campo San Bartolomeo, whether from Rialto bridge or from San Marco, walk north past the statue, keeping it and the tables with umbrellas on you left. You should pass the pharmacy with the population counter in the window. (Please note the number and post back---I am curious what it is now as we saw it drop by 41 residents during the month we were there). Keep going north along the shops and you will come to Sotoportego de La Bissa ( with some letters missing so it reads " de la B s a". There is a green neon sign saying "Rosticceria" pointing into the passageway. Go through and you will see the Rosticceria on your right.

OK, I just "walked" it on Street View and that is the place. The sign indeed says Rosticceria Gislon and the address is 5424.

If you continue east on the same path, from Sotoportego de la Bissa past the Rosticceria and toward a bridge over the little rio, you will come to Gelatoteca SuSo, which has (according to my husband) some of the best gelato in Venice (he likes the dark chocolate and not many places have that.). Boutique del Gelato gets great reviews and is a bit farther on, across the bridge and through Campo San Lio to Salizzada San Lio. If your hotel is in San Marco there is a good route back, taking Salizzada San Lio to the end and turning right.

Brava!

I hope they are still in Venice and saw this in time to go there.

Google went online with Street View for Venice just two weeks after we got back from our monthlong stay. I enjoy revisiting our routes and favorite sights. You can even travel some of the canals to see what you would otherwise only see from a gondola ride (or kayak).

So they never reported back. This is why I don't post here more, seems like a thankless job. Better to just lurk.

But Marie, think about how many people now know how to find a fine restaurant AND dark chocolate gelato even if the OP didn't respond. So, my thanks for the info to everyone who chimed in. Makes me want to go back to Venezia!

Thank you so much for the responses. The key information was that the sign had the old name. When I saw that it was not the one I was looking for, I didn't bother to study it further, to find the other signage. I had walked right by the place multiple times, including on the route to the hotel!

I enjoyed my meal there. Not so much for the food, which was good but not great, but for its "quirkiness". It's a very different kind of place. Good adventure!

The Gelato place "next door" is great. Had treats there at least 3 times, including dark chocolate (extremely dark) that was intense and fabulous, pistachio, limone, combo orange / chocolate (very yummy).

Sorry about the population sign. The pharmacy was closed each time I went by after seeing that message, with shades pulled down and no such sign readily apparent.

Anyway, thanks again to all who offered help.

Thanks for reporting back. We walked by the Rosticceria several times a day but never gave it a try. We mostly cooked dinner in our apartment, using the wonderful fresh fish and veggies from the Rialto market. But my husband managed to route us past the gelato place in late afternoon each day as we returned from a walk.

I asked someone on Tripadvisor who is in Venice now to check the population figure. Answer: as of yesterday Italy time, the figure was 56,864. That is more than 1,000 fewer people than there were in October.
