Searching for hours to no avail

How can I get from Orta San Giulio to Milan Malpensa Airport by bus or by train in order to catch a flight leaving Milan Malpensa at noon?

How much time should I allow?
What are the web sites where I can find this information?

esther,

The easiest route appears to be.....

  • Taxi from Orta San Giulio to Orta Miasino (short trip, should be very cheap)
  • Train from Orta Miasino to Milano Centrale via Novara (time 1H:43M - departure at 08:03 will get you to Milano Centrale at 09:46)
  • Malpensa Express to MXP (time ~52M - departure at 09:55 will get you to the airport at 10:41)

I'm not sure if it will be possible to get there earlier (would have to spend some time checking different options). You might consider staying in Milan the night prior to your flight. That would be the safest method as there could be unexpected delays in getting from Orta which could make you miss your flight.

The only way to make a noon international flight would be to use a car and driver service which is around 75 to 85 euro.

There is actually a better way.
Train from Orta Miasino to Novara departing at 8:03.
Then take the bus from Novara to Malpensa departing at 9:15 from the station.
Arrive at MXP at 1000 hours.

For faster options to get you there earlier you need a rental car or private transfer.

The rome2rio.com site will give you transportation information with links to sites that show schedules.

I would spend the last night in Milano near the train station.

Throwing my vote in with the others for staying near the airport or in Milan on the night prior to your flight. What with Italian public transport having its occasional interesting moments, it's usually safest to stay closer to a departure airport - at a city/town which offers multiple ways of getting there - rather than farther away.

Hi Esther,

Are you staying in aorta as part of the Village Itsly RS Tour? If so, you can relax a bit. Your tour guide will help arrange taxis from your hotel to the train station and/or Malpensa. Often, several other tour members will be leaving around the same time as you. Or, if one else is, you can at least arrange a private taxi as a last resort. I really worried about that before my tour, but it turned out fine, with the tour guide helping! Enjoy!

The Malpensa Express is a private line, not reflected on timetables that draw primarily from the national railways, so most train schedule searches will just show you Orta-Miasino to Milano Centrale station. Buses have traditionally been harder to find because they are operated by many different private companies, but www.Rome2Rio.com seems to be filling that void.

Esther,

I agree with Zoe

"I would spend the last night in Milano near the train station"

To Zoe or Laura,

I researched the Rome2rio website last night and found this info:
train from Orta-Miasino to Gravellona Toce (24 minutes) then a bus to the airport (50 minutes),
however, I was not able to find the bus schedules. (?)

Agree with Gretchen that if you are doing Village Italy the guide will start about Day 2 on working on exit plans. This past October our guide made sure those who were taking the train purchased their tickets ahead of time when we were in Levanto as there is no ticket office or ticket machine in the Orta Miasino station.

There were people on our tour who were leaving Milan the day the tour ended while some of us elected to spend the night in Milan. I believe almost everyone wound up taking a taxi in groups, arranged by the excellent RS guide. One couple did take that 8AM train, with a taxi from the hotel also arranged by Trina.

I was in a group of 5 going to a hotel near the Duomo and I believe we wound up splitting a $150 fare which was well worth the money.

If the poster is in Orta San Giulio and needs to go to Malpensa it makes no sense to go all the way to Milan to spend the night there. If the transportation options via Novara or via Gravellona don't work, it would be much easier to spend the last night in nearby Stresa or Arona on lake Maggiore, or even Gallarate, next to the airport. From all you can reach MXP by bus directly, or train (by train you get off at the Gallarate station and take a taxi from there).
I haven't checked the times of the buses from Gravellona (option suggested by Rome2Rio.com). The Alibus from Domodossola and Gravellona to MXP is operated by Comazzi Bus.

Priscilla, if you click on the bus option it should take you to the bus company's schedule page.

To Zoe, Thanks, I figured it out... but I now understand why Esther had a difficult time finding this info.

Roberto, you are so right! Your option is much better.
