Scopello

Has anyone stayed in Scopello, Sicily? I am looking at it for 3 nights next May. I'll be coming in from Siracusa or Agrigento, with a car, and want something on the west side of the island.

Looking for beach, nature, and a day trip to Segesta. I would then head to Palermo, returning the car and staying there a few nights before heading home.

A friend of a friend recommended this town and knows of a good apartment rental in the area. So, what say the Rick Steves travelers? This will be my first trip to Sicily, but not Italy.

Great choice. A day trip to Erice is also possible, even on the same day as Segesta, since you can visit both in a day from Scopello. Scopello itself is a quaint little sleepy village with an ancient 'baglio' in the middle of "downtown".
You are also very near the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro, a beautiful natural marine park. The beaches are actually rocks, cliffs, and pebbly coves, so carry aqua shoes. But the water is sparkling clean and perfect for snorkeling.
Do a Google image search of everything I listed above to see what I'm talking about.

I second Roberto's advice. Explore the beaches and stay at La Tavernetta which has an incredible view. We did the Segesta to Erice day trip. Be sure to leave early so that you can get to Segesta before it gets hot. Segesta is beautiful but inland and exposed to the sun. Erice is not be missed, very enchanting. Also, visit the Tonarra in Scopello it is a beautiful cove. You will love Scopello, it is very tiny but very charming.

Beaches in May should be fine. As a matter of fact I spent one May in Scopello (toward the second half).
The water is probably still a bit cool, but I was able to swim in it after the initial shock when you first get in. For sure it was warmer than the Pacific Ocean, even in Los Angeles, in July.
