Are you able to rent a scooter in Positano and drive to Ravello? as opposed to taking a bus ride. If yes, would you recommend it?
The Amalfi coast roads are very narrow and curvey w/ on coming busses etc. I suggest the bus. you will relax see the views and keep your costs down and safety up.
Or you could go down to the Positano beachfront, catch a boat to Amalfi, and then take the short bus ride up the hill to Ravello. You catch the bus right at the Amalfi waterfront.
You might see RomeinRome.con discussion on this subject. You will need a driver license with a motorcycle endorsement plus the international permit. Also assume that you are experienced at handling a scooter. Italy is not a good place to learn if you are not.
Dave, what the rental agency may or may not have required is different from what Italian law requires. You're lucky you weren't stopped.
Tracy, I stayed in Sorrento in 2004 or '05 and rented a scooter for a day. I think I went as far down the coast as Amalfi, which looks to be close to Ravello. It was a great day the road was crowded with busses and cars, but I did not feel unsafe at any time. My Washington State drivers' license was all that was required of me, along with a 5-minute "lesson" from the rental agency. My friend and I may go to that part of Italy in '13, and if we do, I would most definitely do it again. Dave

Very treacherous for a scooter. Leave that to the locals. However, I have driven all over the Amalfi Coast by car. It can be a little tight, but much safer overall.
