Hi!
I'm visiting the Amalfi coast with my girlfriend for 3 days in June and is looking to rent a scooter for the legendary Amalfi Coast drive. I know there are lots of turns, but also hear the traffic is very slow. I have a bit of experience riding a scooter on previous vacations, but girlfriend is worried about safety. Any recommendations?
Wear a helmet.
Yes, the travel is slow and the road is twisty.
Just know that the rule for driving in Italy is too watch out for other vehicles and let scooters fend for themselves.
You're probably OK. Just keep your eyes on the road and not on the view. The road is a bit narrow and it does have the twists and turns. The problem is that the Italian drivers feel they can have either side of the road anytime they feel like it. In some of the very tight spots, the buses coming from each direction can have difficulty getting by each other.
You should check out the drive from Positano to Amalfi- I believe the road is closed due to construction. You could motor to Positano then take a ferry ride from there to Amalfi. Beautiful and only E4.00 each way(2006) then a bus ride way up to Ravello E2.00 return.
Hire a local driver and enjoy the scenic beauty.
amalfi coast on a motorino CRINGE!!! Please be careful, and like the previous poster said, keep eyes on the road, not the stunning views!
