Scilla

Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, well, my wife is from Calabria, so we head there every August, three years ago, we visited Scilla. The best and most beautiful part is called Chianalea. We stayed at the Hotel Principe di Scilla, it has magnificent suites and sits right by the sea.

Chianalea is a unique place, it is a fishing quarter and the oldest part of the town of Scilla.
While Scilla is the main town and primary tourist destination, Chianalea is the historic, picturesque gem, often referred to as the "Little Venice" of Calabria.
You absolutely must try the swordfish, as it is the local specialty. In the small harbor, you can see the traditional swordfish-hunting boats moored there, known as feluche, with a towering mast and a long walkway at the bow called the passerella.
This particular shape is designed for spotting and harpooning, the very tall mast allows the fish to be seen from a distance, while the gangway enables the vessel to approach without scaring it off.
You can also find various swordfish dishes at street food stalls, they are incredibly tasty and, above all, very fresh.
Last but not least, there are frequent regional trains from Scilla to Reggio, running about every half hour, and the journey takes just over 30 minutes.

My husband and I loved Scilla when we stayed there briefly a number of years ago. I don't have a recommendation for where to stay, but just wanted to encourage you to go!

Looks like bus or ferry - and it takes about 5.5 hours.

We have visited Calabria the last three falls in October and most places were open.

Ortigia is an island connected to Sicilia (connected to Siracusa). Ortigia is beautiful and a wonderful place to do day trips from on the far east cast of Sicilia. I suggest VRBO there beccause I think it gives you more flexibility during your stay (laundry, space, kitchen).

HA! Maybe I really do need that new pair of glasses I got yesterday! Sorry, Sicilia and Scilla look the same without them. In real life they don't look the same at all. Duh!
