Narrowed it down to two places. Anyone ever been? Which has a better place to walk around in terms of historical town with shops and restaurants.
Thanks

We spent 6 days based in Sciacca late September 2014 so it’s been a while. We had an issue with the apartment we rented and conflict with the owner, requiring us to move out and find another place. Probably because of that experience I don’t have fond memories of Sciacca and it doesn’t stand out as a place I need to go back to. I do remember it being very authentic and untouristed. There’s an active fishing culture and we bought fresh seafood at the waterfront a couple times. I also believe there’s an active ceramics industry there and I remember going into a few workshops to have a look at the artisans work. We had Castellammare del Golfo on our list of places to check out but didnt get there so I can’t comment on a comparison between the two.
It may come down to which is a better base for getting to the nearby areas or sites you also wish to visit and the transportation mode you plan to use. Sciacca is bigger than Castellammare del Golfo so may offer more restaurants. It is known for its ceramics and seafood. It is close enough to do daytrips to Selinunte, nearby Mazara del Vallo and maybe Marsala. I don't think Agrigento would be a daytrip from here unless you have a car. I have not been to Sciacca but did stay for three days in Mazara del Vallo and I suggest that as a possible alternative. I very much liked it as it had quite a bit of Tunisian influence in its historical center and the train station is right by the center of town. Castellammare's old town is anchored by its castle standing watch over the gulf. If you choose Castellammare del Golfo you are really well positioned to see Erice, Segesta, Trapani, Scopello, Borgo Parrini, Mondello, Palermo, San Vito lo Capo, etc. San Vito lo Capo is reputed to be the best beach in Sicily. Are you planning to go to any of these places? I don't think Sciacca is on a train line. Castellammare del Golfo is serviced by train but the station is on the outskirts of town.
