We will be in Sciacca in early May for 3 nights. Any must see sites? Are there hot springs to swim in? Must do restaurants? Hoping to meet with my husbands family still living there, anyone have an success with the Town Hall and finding relatives? Thanks. We won't have a car.
We’ll be staying in Sciacca for 5 nights around Easter this year. So this is my list of possibilities, not recommendations.
One of our main reasons to visit Sciacca is to daytrip on Easter Monday to the small town of San Biagio Platani for the town’s Easter arches decorations. Some or all may still be in place when you visit but you’d have to rent a car or take a taxi. The Museo Degli Archi Di Pasqua should still be there.
My notes:
spa town since 5th century
view from Piazza Scandaliato
local handmade pottery along the central Corso Vittorio Emanuele
majolica-decorated Scalinata Artistica
medieval layout divides town into quarters, each on a strip of rock descending to sea
Cathedral – early 12th cent. dedicated to Magdalene, late Ren. frescoes by Tommaso Rossi. On altar = statue of Our Lady of Help, patroness of city, attrib to Laurana, 1500 baptismal font
Chiesa del Carmine…Near church of Santa Margherita. Gothic rose window on 1300 facade. Many works of art including a statue of St. Vitus, several mid 16th century paintings, sarcophagus of Norman Gilberto. Cool gate nearby.
Palazzo Steripinto — cool exterior
