Schwab Accounts - "Free" ATM Withdrawals?

In my quest to find a bank/checking account that will provide me with transaction fee-free withdrawals, I have come across Schwab's checking accounts. The representative that I spoke with says that as long as I withdraw from an ATM machine with a Visa or Plus logo, Schwab will reimburse me for any transaction fees (directly back into my account, at the end of the each month). Has anyone had experience with this before (call me cynical)? And how common are these ATMs with Visa/Plus logos?

Thanks in advance!

Peggy - I've been traveling with the Schwab card for 1 1/2 years now and I think it is a great card for travelers.

First of all - a little clarification - since you have posted on an international travel board, I have never been charged an ATM fee from an international bank. I have heard that some "non-bank" ATM's will charge fees but I have, for some reason or another, apparently only used Bank-branded ATM's in foreign countries. The way it usually woks in the US is if you withdraw from a bank that is NOT your own bank you get charged twice - once from the bank that owns the machine and once from your own bank, as penalty for not using their machine. With Schwab, they do not have free-standing banks, so you are expected to use other bank's ATMs. Schwab will not charge you for the fee and the $2.00 or $3.00 charge that you are charged by the ATM bank is refunded on your statement at the end of the month. Yes, I have had personal experience with this - getting a credit of around $8.00 per month.

As for availability of the ATM's with Visa/Plus logos - they are all over the place. Actually I have never specifically looked for one with the logo, I just pop my Schwab card in and they have all worked. Between my daughter and myself we have used the Schwab card at ATM's in Western Europe, Canada, Morocco, and Asia - never a problem.

The other thing you will come across is the "foreign transaction fee". This is the fee that is ABOVE AND BEYOND the withdrawal fee and is usually 1-3% of the total transaction. I have had this added to both my BofA and my Wachovia card - which is why I do not use them anymore. The Schwab card, as near as I can tell is 0% - or rather, 0% above the interbank fee that is posted as the exchange rate.

I highly recommend Schwab bank.

We did a 4 weeks tour of Italy with the Schwab's no fee (reimbursed) ATM card. Of course you will need to have an investment account with them first.
