Scheduled Strikes

Hi - My daughter and I have been keeping an eye on strikes in Italy for our upcoming trip September. We have been checking these two websites, http://www.mit.gov.it/mit/site.php?p=scioperi and http://www.cgsse.it/web/guest/scioperi-per-settore?p_p_id=settoriQuotati_WAR_FSIA6_CGSSE_IPZS001SNAPSHOT&p_p_lifecycle=1&p_p_state=normal&p_p_mode=view&p_p_col_id=column-1&p_p_col_pos=2&p_p_col_count=5&_settoriQuotati_WAR_FSIA6_CGSSE_IPZS001SNAPSHOT_actionName=eseguiRicercaScioperiPerSettore&_settoriQuotati_WAR_FSIA6_CGSSE_IPZS001SNAPSHOT_settore=11%3A%3A%3ATrasporto+Aereo

They both list a strike on the 13th of September - the day we arrive in Rome. We are both unclear what organization is striking. It looks like Techno Sky are Air Traffic Controllers. Is that correct? If anyone can clear this up for me I would appreciate it. I am unclear how or if this will affect our travel. We are flying KLM from LAX to FCO via AMS and arrive on the 13th.
I searched on some boards to see what information I could get and while I didn't find exactly what I was looking for most noted that these strikes are typically only 4 hours ( both websites display 24 hours) and on Tripadvisor, one of the Destination Experts (bvlenci), states that "usually" International Flights are not affected.

Any information or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Donna

Other than keeping up with local destination news its hard to take the pulse of local labor actions. One source of known airline labor disputes is the travel insurance exclusion list: http://www.travelguard.com/customerservice/strikelist/

This far out there is not much you can do but worry. Take advice from the dong "Don't worry be happy". As you close in on travel, just have contingency plans or options.

Techno Sky are air radar and flight controlling equipment maintenance. It is difficult to state the impact of a strike as it may have several forms (for example, some workers do not work, some work but refuse to do overtime, some are forced to give anyway minimal levels of assistance). Check again a few days in advance as often Techno Sky strikes are cancelled at the last moment.

Thanks everyone. I do know it is a wait and see kind of thing of which I am no good at!
Monica, I used Google Translation for it as I see no English version.
On another board someone mentioned that US Embassy posts notices on their Facebook page. I checked there and it looks like they post them if they are within the next week or two.

You could be delayed in Amsterdam, but Schipol airport is better than some other places to wait around. Unfortunately, the art gallery provided there by the Rijskmuseum seems to be closed for airport renovation.

Thanks for the information James. You really went the extra mile to get information.
We too are just going to keep track of the status on this strike and take a wait and see approach.
Positive thoughts that it all works out.

I am following this topic, as I have concerns regarding my arrival in Venice on September 27th. There seems to be a planned strike this day as well. For those flying on the 13th with access to this forum, would you mind posting about your issues/non-issues post-flight?

Thanks.

I don't know if this will help, but..........
...............several years ago when had a trip scheduled for Greece and strikes were very common (and serious) at that time, I called the Greek Embassy in (I think it was New York) who was oh so very helpful in translating the local politics and implications.

You might want to Google to find the Italian Embassy's US office, and perhaps they could provide some insight.

A P.S. to my last post:

I'll often also check TravelGuard (travel insurance co) web site. Under their Customer Service icon, the drop down screen shows strike risk that are excluded from their policies (unless one purchased their coverage prior to when they add those strikes).

The only reference to anything in Italy was quite sometime ago, and it had a date on which that exclusion had ended. So, if TravelGuard has not yet added an exclusion, likely there is a minor risk (in the overall travel insurance arena....not to imply it could not have a major risk on your particular flight).

I wish you all the best with your travel plans and a strike-free on-time arrival.
