I will be driving from Rome to Tuscany... well, actually Carmignano, that is where the airbnb is that I am renting. Can you tell me what is the best route to take. I would prefer a scenic route if it doesn't take me too far out of my way.

How many days are you planning to take? If you have a few, I recommend checking out the DK Eyewitness Guide: Back Roads Northern Italy. We borrowed a copy from our library and enjoyed many scenic drives. We started near Pitigliano and headed north, stopping at the Saturnia hot spring on the way. The Chianti area is beautiful. If you are hoping to make the drive in a day, I’d train to closer to Florence and then renting a car.

Funny you mentioned about the hot spring because that was my original plan. However, after reading some reviews I hear that you come out smelling like a rotten egg and we really don't have much time there since I understand it is a long commute so we don't want to take the time to shower and all that too. We are actually doing a road trip and Tuscany is our 2nd destination, so we will be getting a car rental in Rome. I will look into the Back Roads Book. Thanks for your advice. Cheers!

We have been to the hot springs several times. There is a smell, but didn’t seem too bad, since the spring is so spectacular. There is a shower at the concession stand at the entrance, but I hear it’s not always open. When are you planning to visit Tuscany? Also, where are you picking the car up in Rome? We have rented several times from the Tiburtina station, and the access to the freeway was easy.

We are arriving August 29th and then heading north on the 31st. Maybe I will give the hot springs a second thought.
We are renting the car at Termini. Have you ever rented from them before? I heard that I would have to take a train to get to Tiburtina so I thought that the Termini location would be easier since it is a short taxi ride from where I am staying in Rome.

I rented from the Termini once. It was tricky getting out of Rome- definitely needed GPS. Where are you staying in Rome? We stayed near Piazza Navona and were able to take a bus right to Tiburtina. Where is your first destination? Before Rome?
