Scenic route from Florence to Bari

I’m driving from Montespertoli (outside of Florence) to Bari over a couple of days before a friend and I start our 10-day trip in Puglia. I haven’t been able to find much about other people’s experiences in the area and would love to get some suggestions for places to stop along the way (or the route itself).

It’s a slow drive over the weekend so my route is biased much more towards a scenic trip versus a time efficient one. Right now I’m planning to spend a night in the mountains around Castel di Sangro and then another night in Castelmezzano before heading to Bari.

I do not have in-depth experience, but your idea to spend some time in Abruzzo is a good one, it looks stunning!
I am less sure about Castelmezzano: it significantly lengthens the drive.
Does your Puglia itinerary take you to the Gargano peninsula? It would be a lovely side trip.
Or, perhaps consider a second night in Abruzzo to be able to properly explore the mountains?

Thanks for the reply. Our trip is mainly focussed on Val d'atria, Lecce, and Matera, so I hadn't thought about going to Gargano. But it may be worth going to on my way down to Bari... I had considered driving down the Adriatic coast and then back up through Abruzzo using a more "central" route.
