We are driving from the Adriatic near Pesaro to Florence soon. Can anyone recommend a pleasant route that isn't too terribly windy, but scenic. We would prefer not driving the Autostrada.
Thanks!
Here you have a scenic route: https://goo.gl/maps/61hmNeUjY8p
It passes through three interesting sights: Urbino (an old and very well preserved medieval town that is very lively because it hosts a university), San Marino old town (approaching from the backside, thus missing all the main shopping drag up from Rimini) and the San Pietro di Romena church.
In Urbino, there are well marked paid parking lots outside the ancient walls, there is no need (or legal possibility) of driving within the old town. It is a very attractive old town that, for its location, doesn't get as swamped by tour buses or people day-tripping from Firenze or Roma.
In San Marino, likewise, there are public paid garages and lots where you can comfortably park your car.
This route I gave you would take some 5h30 of total driving time, although it is just 230km long, as it passes through scenic countryside routes. It is ideal for a full day leisure drive, with a 4h stop in Urbino and a 2h stop in San Marino, and a 30min stop at San Pietro d Romena church. There is only one winding but relatively low mountain pass.
If you feel that 6h too much, cut San Marino and use this route instead: https://goo.gl/maps/8bw7abX2bG92 . It has some 4h30 of driving time + stops in Urbino and the aforementioned church.
