Scenic Drives in Tuscany

Hi! My husband and I will have a car for four days in Tuscany (driving from Florence to Siena.) We have yet to decide where we want to go, but we've heard Valdorcia is beautiful. We want to know if there are popular scenic drives that we should take advantage of while we are there. We would also like to hit southern Tuscany as well. Thanks!

The drive between Florence and Siena on Highway 222 is spectacular. Usual advice here - be careful picking up your car in Florence so that you don't drive through areas that are off-limits to non-resident traffic. Go to your AAA office before you leave and get an International Drivers Permit.

The Val d'Orcia is beautiful . You can find great guidance here http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/sd_driving_tuscany.htm. Slow Travel also has many scenic drives listed in the right hand column of the website above. The Val d'Orcia is south of Siena, FYI and is considered southern Tuscany. We found Montalcino made a good base. Loved the Abbey of Sant'Antimo!

i second what doug said. the S222 highway from florence to siena is amazing. also, i've driven between siena and montepulciano and montalcino using similar rural highways that feature equally awesome views. i forget the exact names of that highways, by i'm sure they'd be fairly easy to find on a map.

Blimey... if y'all like the 222 that much, you'll be blown away by the SP438! It winds South-East from Siena through the most amazing, dramatic landscape. Highly recommended. The drive between Montalcino and Sant' Antimo also showcases some very pretty landscapes. I also like the drive to Volterra from the SI-FI freeway. Poggibonsi is horrible, but once you get closer to Volterra (feel free to detour to San Gimignano), the landscape gets very dramatic.
