Is it possible to have a scenic drive up the coast by the Cinque Terre? It would be great if there are lookout points or something. What are the chances of that? Thanks for any info.

martha remember why this coastline remains free of the big bus tours-no real roads there. now with that said there are, certainly, roads in the high hills above the coast, which do have access into the towns. there is a major freeway too. try finding the best detailed italy roadmap, like michelin or better, the survey maps.
good luck. larry from springfield.
The best way to see the scenic coastline is not from a car but from a boat! You can take a ferry that goes all along the five villages. They leave from La Spezia and go from there to Portovenere, Riomaggiore, Manarola (no stop there), Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosse - and back. You can take any portion of this as well.
Don't forget Google Earth to get a closer look at the roads.
We drove from southern France to Vernazza in July 2006 (had trained in previously from La Spezia) and the road was extremely narrow with many hairpins. You couldn't see much either. Go for the scenis boat ride instead!
