We will be driving from Lucca to Aviano and I am looking for the most scenic route. This will be our only drive through the Dolomites. Does anyone have any suggestions of routes to take? We are planning on just spending the day driving (it will be Easter Sunday, I'm sure everything will be closed, so we will just plan to see the beauty of the area). Thanks.
I drove the route RS recoms in his guidebk. Realize this is an area with narrow windy 2 way roads only. It is beautiful but very tiring for the driver. definately plan your drive carefully. I would do it again buit allow more than a day. We stayed in Bolzano next time I will stay in the dolomites. it is incredibly gorgeous.
From Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo or in reverse is a drive that offers stunning scenery. As mentioned by JS this route is described in R. Steves' guide book. Hopefully the weather will be ok for you but check before you start driving to make sure the roads are open. Our intentions were to drive it in one day starting from Venice but we enjoyed it so much we took 3 days and spent 2 nights along the way. You can easily drive it in one day but I would suggest you stop along the way for photos and allow yourself time to soak in the views. If your plans are flexible maybe you could take an extra day to enjoy the area.
Hi Julie, we PCSed from Layton to Aviano about three years ago! So I assume you are ASAF. With that said, I know you are resilent, but please understand driving in Italy is not like driving in the states. It will take more time than you ever imagined. There will also be tolls, so you will need lots of Euro before you get going.
I don't know what to tell you about routes, but I can help you with more regional stuff. I have loved Italy!! They are going to have to put me on a plane kicking and screaming when they make us leave!!
Let me know if you want Aviano info! I'm glad to help. T
I am thinking the same thing as Tina--somehow military right?
Go from the autostrada exit, from there to Bassano del Grappa, to The Dolomites into Aviano.
A better bet would be to take a day trip from Aviano to Cortina. Have lunch there. If you're lucky you can see someone go off the ski jump.
Actually, my sister's husband is in the Air Force. We just get to travel and visit them through their different stops. We hope they go to Germany next. We do love our Hill friends out here:). Thanks for all the replys. I haven't studied that part of my RS book yet, I have been too worried about the other parts of our trip. Italy should be amazing!
