Scenery from Rome to Munich via train

We might, due to high airline prices and long stops, ride a day train from Rome to Munich or we can take a night train and sleep and get their earlier. Is the scenery that good?????? Any one done it??

If you're going on a night train you're not going see much scenery. Overnight trains are not exactly cheap. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find a better price on a direct flight on a budget airline like Vueling. If you book several weeks in advance the fares are usually good but you have to be careful about the luggage weight restrictions. I have only been on one overnight train and will never do it again. We didn't sleep well so the money we "saved" by spending the night on the train and not in a hotel was offset by the fact we lost most of a day sleeping upon arrival.

I've never flown on Vueling but would have no hesitation to as long as I understood ALL the rules. As is common with all European budget airlines - they are a budget carrier.

No frills and not a lot of comfort but a cheap price. The cheap price can rise when you check luggage or don't abide by their rules. That is why you need to read them all carefully.

At least they fly to and from major airports which is more than can be said for Ryanair.

All budget airlines rely on more than the base fare to make their bottom line sing.

I've taken a day train from Milano to Zurich and the scenery for the first part is spectacular, then the train goes through the flatter part of Switzerland which for me is nap time.

But 10 hours. Brenner pass is probably good, but much of Italy from Rome may get boring! Seems Everyone is negative on night trips on the train.

I will check other flight options first, then......I'll have to play Solomon and divide the baby!(GRIN)

Check out skyscanner.com for air fare comparisons. Rome to Munich is $60 on Vueling and $84 on Iberia (I checked a random date in December, which I believe is when you're going).

If you search hard enough, probably airlines are cheaper than train on such a long stretch.
Scenery evaluation:
Rome to Florence - nice
Florence to Bologna - almost all in a tunnel
Bologna to Verona - flat uninteresting landscape
Verona to Bolzano - very long valley producing wine and apples
Bolzano to Innsbruck - mountain section, in very deep valleys, you do not see much mountains
Innsbruck to Rosenheim - large valley
Rosenheim to Munich - Bavarian hills
