SCAVI Tour Security

I was fortunate to get a reservation a SCAVI Tour (Tour of St Peter's Tomb). Security for this site is different than the general security for entrance to the Basilica which I know can be VERY long. . Has anyone taken the SCAVI Tour and experienced the security line?

Other than to mention the location of the entrance and that we should arrive 15 minutes before the tour, there is no special mention of the need to add additional time specifically for long security lines.

I have written to the tour office and have not received an answer to my question.

Has anyone had experience with this situation?

The security line is short due to the limited number of people who can take the tour at that certain time. You aren't even allowed into the area for the security check until you show your tickets to a guard at the entrance to that particular area. You do not need to worry about the line. Arrive at the time they state, and you will be fine.

slbdaisy,

Thanks for your response. That helps. We have a 9:15 am tour and I want to do the dome climb first. We will be at the Basilica early, before the security lines open at 7:00am, in order to put us in line for the dome essentially when it opens at 7:30. That would give us 90 minutes before we have to be at the Scavi.

Just one more experience to note - we arrived too early (probably by 30 minutes) and were sent away, as noted above. We returned at the time we were told to re-arrive - and discovered that the tour was about to begin. We had to race off to the starting point. No damage done in the end, but I am still wondering at what time everyone else was let into the area and why we were told to report back at an "almost too late" point of time.

As someone who is generally early by 15 minutes or so for an appointment, I think if I did this tour again (which would be worthwhile!!!), if sent away, I would still hang around the security point and observe! I remember the 15 minute increment and believe we were there at that time - stunned to see everyone else had already entered and guide was starting up.

ORDtraveler,

Thanks for the added clarity. I wondered if the guard just read your tour time incorrectly. That would have been very unfortunate. It is clear that "they leave without you", if you are late.
