We have an 11:15 scavi tour that I have read lets out in St. Peters Basilica so we can see that then. What time should I try to get museum tickets for? Or skip it and just wait in line after we eat lunch.
How early should be be there to go through security before headed to excavations office?
Never wait in the Vatican Museums line, ever! Get a mid- or late afternoon admission, it's a long walk from Piazza San Pietro to the Museums entrance, you will see the line as you walk around the wall and be happy you are not standing in it.
I did the Scavi tour at that time, and afterwards we had lunch and then came back at 2:00 for the museum. We got to the tour about 15 minutes early and gathered outside the excavations office. I don't remember anything particular about security (2014) but perhaps the procedure has changed.
