In June my family and I are doing the 21 day Best of Europe Tour. On the day we go to the Vatican the tour description says we will do St. Peters Basilica then tour the Vatican museum and the afternoon is free. We were hoping to do the Scavi tour after we were set "free".... does anyone have any idea if this realistic? If so, what would be a safe time to request the Scavi tour? Since it needs to be reserved at least two months in advance, this is something I need to work on now. Will our free time be at Vatican City or will we need to transport ourselves back to Vatican City?
If anyone else has successfully done this please let me know.
Thanks!
Realistic? Yes because the last tours leave mid to late afternoon and I imagine you will be done by then. I would put in the request ASAP though. The sooner you put in the request, the higher chance you will get your date and time.
Since I have not taken the Rick Steves' tour, I don't know when you will be done with your day. But I can tell you it will only take you 5-10 min max to walk over to where the Scavi Tour leaves. Hopefully one of the staff members on here will know or maybe you should just call the company directly. I suspect times vary tour to tour.
Here is the website with info to request tickets.

When I sent in my request, my confirmation took about 3 months to get. Some people got theirs in two weeks. Some people longer than me.
Good luck to you!
I think you should be fine requesting a time for as late in the day as they can make it. Just be aware that they don't allow anyone under 15 on this tour so if you're traveling with kids you'll need to skip it.
I believe once the museums tour is over you can spend the rest of the day doing whatever you wish. You don't need to go anywhere else with the guide. If you're party is old enough to take the scavi tour I would put in the request as soon as possible. It may already be too late.

Yes, immediately!
I am on it!! Still have not sure what time to request, but I'll think of something. Thanks for the input everyone, I haven't pursued this sooner because I only just found out about it. And I apologize for not proofreading my question before posting , must have been confusing!
