Saving Venice

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220927-italys-plan-to-save-venice-from-sinking?utm_source=pocket-newtab

I don't know if it is possible to save Venice. A good articles on the attempts being made but global warming could be a very tough barrier to overcome. I personally think that we don't have the will to do much about global warming. Often thought that in 75 years a visit to Venice could be on a sightseeing boat through the canals to see the crumbling ruins of a once great city. I hope my pessimist view doesn't hold.

Frank, yes I think that's a likely future. But I submit that if that's true, the sum of the catastrophic scenarios all over will make sightseeing itself a thing of the past.

Since they outlawed the pumping of ground water, in the 60's the SINKING of Venice has slowed to pre-industrial levels.
I think 1 MM a year is going to take a very long time to truly be a problem.

More likely issues will be how the land and flooding is managed along the Piave, Brenta, Bacchilione and Adige rivers. And how the MOSE project is going to deal with heavy rainfall events that coincide with heavy inland rainfall and a wind/high tide from the East. Do they raise MOSE? Do they not raise MOSE? Its estimated that a raising and lowering will cost 375 million dollars per if averaged out over its total construction cost. Dats a lotta Meat-a Balls!

The big issue is the raising sea levels. Six inches and Venice is gone.
