Saturnia to Florence

Hello, my husband and I will be traveling from Saturnia to Florence October 19 th and have found that there is limited transportation. We are aware of the train options , but also know they take approx 6 hours to get the Florence. Does anyone have any other suggestions that are not rental cars? I saw a shared ride company, Blah Blah Car, but I have not heard from them since placing a request. We are ok with the train, but if there were a faster route; we’d love to hear of further options. Thank you.

Bus to Manciano, then bus from Manciano to either Orbetello station or Grosseto.
Then the train via Livorno and Pisa.
Maybe not 6 hours, but 5 for sure.
But how are you going to Saturnia without a car?
I’ve never gone to Saturnia without a car and I would never attempt to go without one.

Hi Heather -
I haven't been to Saturnia but did some poking around per your question out of curiosity. I'm interested how you're getting to Saturnia in the first place? It doesn't have a train station; according to what I'm seeing, the closest stations are in Albinia, Orbetello or Grosseto, and you apparently have to travel there by (infrequent) buses with a change in Manciano. No bus to/from Saturnia on Sundays.

Honestly, this is one of those situations where I think a car is your best option. As one website put it, while not impossible, "It’s a pain in the butt" to do by public transit. That said, where are you staying? The host at your accommodation might be a good source of info.

Editing to add, was typing away at the same time you were posting, Roberto. Apologies for some redundancies. :O)

My husband really does not want to drive , so we are looking for a driver. Do you have any recommendations? We leave Rome for Saturnia on October the 17 and depart on the 19 th. I believe we’ll do the transit from Rome to get to the Saturnia area, but will need transportation to get to our final place of lodging. We will need a driver to take us to Florence on Saturday the 19 th. I already inquired with our hosts but they didn’t have any recommendations. I’ve requested some quotes throughout this week , but have not received any responses.
Thank you

Is he dead set against a short car rental from a place like Orvieto? We’ve driven from there to Saturnia and the ride is not at all congested. You could then train Rome to Orvieto and after the side trip to Saturnia you could train on to Florence this would save you a lot of time and money. This would allow you to see Pitigliano on the way, which is spectacular. Are you going to Saturnia for the hot springs?

Yes, we are going to go the hot springs and staying for two nights. Thank you for the feedback about Orvieto and the transfer site. This is the direction I’ve been trying to head.

Thank you

The natural cascade hot springs are the most spectacular. The resort is not as special. I’m sure you will be able to make taxi arrangements to and from wherever you stay.

The natural cascade was one of the most memorable experiences I had in Europe -- and we discovered it serendipitously -- just wonderful. But this is an area you really can't access without a car.

Both Hertz and Europcar have agencies in Grosseto. Saturnia is near Grosseto. Then if you don’t want to drive to Florence, you can return the car in Grosseto and take a train.
