I believe the writers were spoofing a real commercial from the NY/NJ area.

All, I don’t mean any disrespect to any tour company. I love traveling and I am so happy to talk to like minded travelers everywhere!
I’m signed up for Rick Steve’s “best of Italy” in September 2020 and I’m beyond excited! I have always used Rick Steve’s travel guides for many years, I trust and love the brand. That’s why I signed up for the tour
I love the policy of “no grumps” that’s the main reason I posted this!
Just a super funny video- just take it as it is. No ulterior motives- it’s just laugh out loud funny! Enjoy! 😊

Heather is right. This is a spoof of Perillo Tours, a family business from NJ. Their commercials have aired most of my life as the business was started by the late Mario Perillo & now run by the son Steve who is the face of these commercials.

Steve and his sister Linda Perillo were on talk radio right after the segment aired in May and they loved it. The Perillo brand is so ubiquitous on the east coast and has such a good reputation. And Steve’s ads follow in his father’s tradition. All good!

Love it! And, the spoof is good case of "TRUTH in advertising." Totally funny. I might need to start watching SNL again :) but it airs past my bedtime now.

In humor there is truth...

What is amazing to me is that so many people think that travelling this way through Italy is normal & fulfilling. I have friends, people I respect, that have taken Perillo Tours. And. They. Loved. It.

I think for what they do, Perillo does it very well. And if you're of a mind that 'I want it all done for me', and still want to see the sights--the 'checklist' as RS says--then go for it. Truth be told, tours by definition are like this, even the RS tours to a certain extent.

I guess I must not be wired that way. Granted--in an exotic place like Cambodia, for example, I'd probably be more comfortable on a tour of sorts. But then I'd probably do so much research I'd regret it. I just like waking up early morning in a place like Rome, and not have any plans whatsoever. I figure we'll find our way, and it will probably end up being pretty good & a lot of fun. It's interesting--as conservative & planned as I am here in the US, I'll take chances in Italy & northern Europe, do stuff spontaneously, not really assured that it will work out well.

But my rationale is--well, if plans fall apart, I'm still in Italy and that's a plus! That's what keeps me going...

I wasn't able to access the NBC video due to some kind of "geographic restriction". I also couldn't find it on YouTube. Oh well....

Ken, I posted this very same video months ago on the forum.

It is not new; been around for awhile.

It is a parody about escorted tours - Perillo Tours.

Adam Sandler does a great job at mimicking Steve Perillo.

Maybe this link will work for you.

Romano Tours - SNL - YouTube is the title.

Be sure to watch the Joe Piscopo Perillo family interview. It was pretty much a schmooze when Joe visited their family and had dinner. Also watch the Perillo ad they parodied. They did a great job!

The Perillo's acknowledged the parody with grace and humor and came across positively.

There's actually a lot of truth in the Adam Sandler parody. I see it reflected here in posts. You can pretty much figure out who are cheerful optimists and who are "Debbie Downers". When we did our Viking River Cruise, the only tour we've done in years (we travel independently), some folks had a great time and some complained about every little thing and had a miserable trip.

It took me a long time to learn, but you usually get what you expect no matter what type of travel you choose. If you are cheerful, friendly and outgoing, folks you interact with will reflect that back to you. Conversely if you are sullen and expect the worst, you'll find the natives "rude". Yes, there's been rare times when someone I was dealing with was determined to be grumpy, but I remind myself that I'm on a wonderful adventure and they aren't important enough to spoil my mood.

Thanks, Lisa! I watched and laughed out loud. So very true. I love Rick's "no grumps" policy because it gives me a bit of security that a RS tour group will not be overcome with a group of complainers. Of course, if something needs to be addressed, we can always go to our guide in private to voice our concerns.

Thanks for sharing!

Too bad!

Hi everyone, glad that you enjoyed this!
@Rick sorry you couldn’t access the video... it was funny. I actually just watched it the other day- I had some recent episodes of Saturday Night live DVR’d and saw it on the Adam Sandler episode ( it must have be a rerun if someone mentioned they posted it months ago)

You know, I had a similar situation-a few weeks ago, my husband and I were traveling all over Canada and I had downloaded a couple videos to watch from Amazon prime and when I tried to play them in Canada the same thing happened to me about the geographic restrictions or whatever the message said! Sorry !
