Sassi di Matera and Orvieto ZTL and hotel recommendation

We plan to drive in these 2 towns and worried lot about the ZTL. Is there any website that summarize CLEARLY all the ZTL zones in Italy? I do find few but all of them provide unclear maps. The ZTL streets fonts are very small and hard to zoom out.

I have a good recommendation from a nice lady in the forum for staying at Hotel Il Belvedere in Sassi di Matera. It looks great and the service is wonderful. They reply my email in instance. They say driving to the hotel from Bari (direction I'd come from) would not cross path with the ZTL zone. There are parking spots too in front of their hotel. It's just I'm still looking for a closer hotel to the city centre that would not cross path with ZTL zone too whilst driving. Any recommendation?

Orvieto ZTL also seems all over the town. So I decide to book a hotel, Hotel Picchio, the closest with the train station without checking its review since it seems that's the only hotel available close to the train station. All the others are within the ZTL zone. We are going to bring 2 large suitcases with us and stopping at Orvieto Station. Surely we won't drag those large suitcases around the town. Any other recommendation?

I'm not sure about the ZTL areas in Matera, but as I recall the ZTL in Orvieto covers much of the town. Your best bet is to either park at the station and take the Funicular up to town, or take a Taxi from the station if you have a lot of luggage.

Thanks Ken, that's what I thought as well. So better stay in the hotel just outside the train station then take funicular to visit the town. I'd arrive by train to Orvieto but going to visit surrounding areas so will pick up rental car from one near the train station as well

Cheers

Jen,

Why not stay in the town of Orvieto instead of down by the station? There are lots of nice hotels and restaurants there, and it's nice to wander the small streets in the evening. Have a look at Hotel Corso as it's an easy walk from the Funicular station.

Someone posted a website recently that shows ZTLs, perhaps a search would bring it up. I really would not sweat it too much--unless you have a walking impairment, definitely stay where you will enjoy staying (and being on foot). There are signs that indicate if you are about to enter a ZTL. In Matera, we did not find it difficult to navigate in the surroundings.

The old city of Orvieto is on top of the hill and if you stay near the station you will be away from that,,,,,from all the sites, the restaurants, the Cathederal, the market - in fact all the reasons for being in Orvieto. Ken’s hotel suggestion has parking and makes arrangements for ZTL access according to reviews. Other hotels in the old town with parking probably do the same.

Thanks All for your inputs. I really appreciate it.

The ZTL arrangement between the hotel and the police sometimes do not take place so I read. But perhaps it's happened in big cities? The funicular goes every few minutes with a shuttle bus connection to Piazza Duomo. It's just the operating time stops around 8 - 8.30pm. I think we are going to take later train from Salerno which makes us arrive at Orvieto at 7.30pm. The downside on the hotel I book, it's located in a steep road and only few eateries (which reviews suggest just adequate) around.

Here’s a link to a website covering ZTL’s in Italy. There is no listing for a zone in Sassi. The hotel in Orvieto at which I stayed last December (Hotel Duomo) appears to be in the zone but to date I have not received any notifications from my car rental company or a municipal authority. Whew! Of course it still might arrive.

Hi Phillip
thanks for the link. I read the fine ticket could arrive even a year later.

The ZTL, i agree with the locals, it's just like a mouse trap. an additional revenue for the government
