SARDINIA - Which town to stay in and cost?

My wife and I will be in Vienna Sept 15-21 and are looking for a week beach vacation afterwards. We thought about the Lagarve in Portugal but have always been curious about Sardinia. Flights seem inexpensive to Olbia. The beaches look beautiful. Here are my questions. Of all the areas in Sardinia which one would you choose and why, and would we want to move around the island and stay in several places or stay in one place, Seems like we would need to rent a car? Is it expensive? What would a 7- day itinerary look for you? thanks so much

Also we have been to Croatia but other then Sardinia wis there another beach vacation yo would recommend, we like charming towns as much as the beaches. Cost is a factor. . It seems that whenever we travel in Europe it works out to be between $200- $300 per day.
thanks so much

We spent 2.5 weeks in Sardinia last September. We rented a car in Cagliari (and dropped off in Olbia). We had the rental car for at least 10 days and I don't believe it was very expensive - we used Cars by Sicily*). We traveled around the island and enjoyed the beautiful views and the excellent food.

For your trip, there are some beautiful spots near Olbia. Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo are popular but more expensive I think - we drove through the towns but didn't stay.

If cost is a factor, I'd consider time in Santa Teresa Gallura - it's a smaller city but the beaches there are beautiful. We stayed at a small hotel - Hotel da Cecco. Our room was smallish but very comfortable and the staff there (family owned) was great. Parking was available beside the hotel and you could easily walk to the beach.

Another city we liked was Alghero (not so far from Olbia and Santa Teresa Gallura). We liked Hotel Angedras there.

From either city, you have options for day trips to explore the northern coast. From Alghero, Bosa was a nice daytrip.

Three to four nights in each city (Santa Teresa and Alghero) would make a great trip. We stayed in Olbia the night before our return flight but didn't find it as appealing as other places in Sardinia.

NOTE: *We've used Cars by Sicily in the past and had a good experience. When we returned the car to Olbia, we scraped the underside of the front bumper on curb in front of us. They were difficult to deal with but it was resolved with credit card insurance coverage.
