Sardinia in September

We are planning on going around middle of September and want to stay where there is nightlife and great beaches. Focusing on Porto Cervo. Is this the right part of the island for this and do we need a car to get around. Looking at hotels that are within a couple of miles of the harbor. Any suggestions appreciated!

Beautiful beaches in Sardinia are everywhere. This is a comprehensive guide:

My favorite part is the Northern side of the island, and in fact all the times I've been to Sardinia, I've always been in Gallura (in or near Santa Teresa). Whatever you do I recommend to take at least one boat excursion to the Maddalena archipelago. There are organized tours from every harbor around there (Santa Teresa and Palau for example).
I don't have much recent experience in terms of nightlife (my wife and I aren't spring chickens anymore) but there are places everywhere, being a popular vacation spot. Although September is already slower since most Europeans have gone back home by that time.
I've visited Porto Cervo more than once (as a day trip from Santa Teresa), but that is not the place for me. Too many pretentious and pompous multimillionaires with yachts bigger than oil tankers frequent that area, and I can't afford the prices. Maybe you are a multimillionaire and will find yourself among your crowd.
You will definitely need a car in Sardinia, and if you go to Porto Cervo you should rent a luxury car to fit in with the crowd.
