Sardinia in mid September

I’m wanting to go to Sardinia in mid September for three nights then on to Positano or Amalfi, im not sure a lot of people are telling me to stay into Sorrento . Positano as I’m being told is expensive and hilly . Someone even said it’s a nice place to take some pics but that’s about all .

I’m accepting the fact I’m going to get a hotel for 500-800 euros a night in Positano and possibly Sardinia .

Any advice what town would be best for 3 -4 nights and is 3 nights enough in Sardinia?

Where is a good place to stay in Sardinia , I was thinking Olbia or Cagliari ?
Thanks

I don't think your plan is wise. Choose either Sardinia, or the Amalfi/Sorento/Positano area. Not both.

I see no point in going to Sardinia and spending just one or two days there (the day you arrive, as well as the day you leave, will be consumed by travel, so don't count those). The same is true for the Amafli coast.

I spent almost 3 weeks in Sardinia in September 2017, and loved it, and I felt like I was not spending enough time there. 3 nights? That would be a tragedy. You need a lot more time being somewhere and less time shuttling between places -- especially these places.

Respectfully, I suggest you reconsider your plans. I would give Sardinia at last a week, at the absolute minimum - and even then, you would need to restrict yourself to just one corner of the island (and all of it is worth seeing). It's a big place! (second largest island in the Mediterranean, just behind Sicily....would you go to Sicily for just 3 nights?).

The same is true for Amalfi/Sorrento/Positano - there's plenty to see and do there, just a couple days is not appropriate, it deserves more time.

How many days/nights do you really have? It doesn't sound like enough to do both places to me...

I could do a week in both , I’m not really on a time schedule. If I don’t like a place I don’t want to be stuck there .

What’s the best way to get to Sardinia ,Flying ?

I agree with David that 3 days on Sardinia is too little. You will have to rent a car to see the island because there are limited public transportation options. I visited the year before David in mid to late September and never spent more than €100 per night for lodgings. My tastes might be simpler than yours and I stayed at 2 agriturismos as well well as some 3 and 4 star hotels.

Sardinia is a pretty tourist free paradise at that time of year. As mentioned, it’s a fairly large island and there’s a lot to see. If you can’t devote a minimum of 10 nights there, I wouldn’t visit.

Easiest way to Sardinia is on Alitalia from FCO to Càgliari. There are a few flights every day and it takes an hour.

At that time of year, the Amalfi Coast (yes, Positano is very hilly) is still in high season so prices are high and tourists and vacationers are plentiful. With my aversion to crowds, I would definitely opt for Sardinia with its mountains and beautiful coastline and beaches. I’ve been to the AC twice and Sardinia only once but I’m thinking about going back again later this year.

If you had more time, you could take the 1 hour ferry ride to Corsica and explore that island as well. On my trip, i was on Sardinia for 10 days and Corsica for 4.

There are flights to both Càgliari in the south and Alghero or Olbia in the north.
Cagliari and Olbia are the two busiest airports in the island.
The north side is probably more popular, but outside of July and August, the entire island is pretty devoid of tourists.
You can find which flights are available to any of the above airports by going to the Wikipedia article of the airport you are interested in.
Air Italy (formerly Meridiana Airlines) is based in Olbia and starting this April Air Italy has several flights to the US from Milan Malpensa (MXP) so it might be another good option in addition to Alitalia.

There is not a chance that you won’t like Sardinia. If you like the sea, you will love Sardinia.

Great information, thank you all !! How’s getting around with a car ? I see some blogs and it seems like there is no paved roads, is the weather still good in September?

Thanks again

The roads are fine, well-paved, with high standard as elsewhere in Italy. Road conditions are nothing to worry about.

Unpaved roads? You must have gone to a blog from the 1940s. I didn’t know there were blogs on the internet already 70 years ago. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an unpaved Highway in Sardinia or Italy for that matter. Maybe some private farm driveways, but otherwise all public roads in Italy are paved. It’s not Central or SouthAmerica.

The only thing you must worry about is that the highways along the coasts are two lane highways with many curves (there are multilane freeways but they are all mostly in the interior), so you need to drive carefully and disregard the reckless Sardinians who drive full speed and pass cars on curves on those highways. Some roads in the interior may have the occasional sheep herd crossing the road, so be on the lookout for that too. Other than that, driving there is easier than most places because there is little to no traffic outside of peak season (July and August).
The weather should still be warm to hot.
