Sardinia?

Is there something uniquely great about Sardinia that makes it worth a visit?

For years I wanted to visit Sardinia - to taste the cuisine and visit the famous blue zone, and soak in the unique ambiance of the place, and hear the language closest to ancient latin. However, its a hassle to get there, and the cities look pretty unremarkable compared to most of the rest of Italy. The beaches are nice, but there are nice beaches other places too. So in the past, I have elected to go to Sicily or Malta instead. Sicily has such a wealth of history, culture, and food, that it seems to outshine Sardinia by a long shot.

The greatest appeal of Sardinia is the pristine sea, the beaches, the cliffs, so basically the natural landscape. Actually very few places have beaches that match the beauty of Sardinia. There are of course also quaint towns and villages, like Castelsardo, Bosa, etc. and some historical sights. So it really depends on your interests. If nature, in particular marine landscape, doesn’t interest you, then maybe you can find other destinations that are more of interest to you.

Thanks.

Apparently the Sardinians are genetically and linguistically distinct from Italy, and have the most old people per capita. They also have the very old stone homes dating back thousands of years.

They are, but you won’t hear Sardinians speaking their dialect much, except for maybe within their family. Also dialects, including Sardinian, are kind of going extinct with the young generations. So you will hear Italian spoken, maybe with a Sardinian accent. The stone structures you are referring to are called Nuraghe. We don’t know much about that lost civilization, though.

Their food is also peculiar and somewhat different from what most people associate with Italian food. If you like the sea, pay a visit. There are hundreds of beaches to die for. Check some here:
