My husband and I will be traveling in Sardinia in May. We'll be staying in Baunei, then in Dorgali and want to do a lot of hiking and also take a boat tour along the coast of the gulf of Orosei. Has anyone taken a boat tour from either Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese? Tours are offered from both sites. We don't want to spend a fortune (probably $80-125 or so), and want to be sure to include Cala Goloritze. Including swims seems to be common. I see that many tour operators go out for 6-8 hours. Shorter versions would also be welcome. I also noticed that one company mentioned their tours weren't appropriate for (among others) "pregnant women" (no problem here) or "People over 65" (definitely us). I'm sure we're in fine enough shape for a boat tour as well as some good hikes! Anyway, any recommendations most welcome. Thanks!
I did! It was such a wonderful day. We did one from Cala Gonone. It was I think 6 hours, from 11-5, if I remember correctly. We stopped at three beaches, for 90 minutes each, which sounds long but was perfect. We bought lunch provisions at a grocery store near the dock from which we departed. The sandwiches were amazing. The boat had indoor and outdoor seating and was very comfortable. I dont remember how many people it held (30?). I dont remember the company name. What made it so great? The scenery was amazing (if you've ever been to Yosemite, it was like Yosemite on the mediterranean). It was incredibly relaxing - one of those days that is a vacation from your vacation. The Sandwiches from that grocery deli were the best. I am not a beachy person either. More of a gritty backpacker. And that was a great day, lol.
Sorry to hop on but I just have one questions about the boat trips in this area--I am just starting my planning.
@Jessica, when you say the boat has inside seating, is some of it covered? We of course would have sunscreen, but an uninterrupted stretch of sun for hours will result in a burn for us (we have been hesitant to take such trips in the past for fear we'd get burnt to a crisp). thanks!
Thanks for your reply, @jessica, and your enthusiasm for this part of Sardinia--can't wait! I'm thinking of waiting until we get there to find the right boat experience--the boats with shade seem to be the larger "hop-on/hop-off" boats, which take 165 passengers. Not sure that's what we want. We're both writers & my husband wants to sketch, so time in each place would be great. I've liked the info on the strictly Sardinia blog about boat trips. Any other thoughts out there are welcome!
Thanks for that info Renee. It sounds more our speed to stroll the waterfront and find a smaller boat. Fingers crossed we'll both have great weather in May!
It was a wooden boat, like a trawler (??? Im not a boat person) with a deck and an inside area with tables + benches (imagine a walkway down the center, and tables with benches attached to the walls on either side). There's no assigned seating so you can walk around wherever. You could purchase the trip that stopped at the cave first (where you would get out and go into the cave) but I opted to not do this bc I planned to hike to the cave on our own. After the third beach, we headed straight for Cala Gonone, and were given an apertif en route. By then everyone was blissfully tired and sun-exposed. I made reservations a few weeks in advance online, and then went to the ticket office to pick up the tickets that morning (ticket office was up the road from the dock, thus easily walkable). There were definitely NOT 165 ppl! I read reviews of companies on Tripadvisor, and picked a company. When I look back at my records of that trip, I dont have that listed so I cant remember the name (Id have to pull up my CC statement). You bring everything you need, from towels to food to sunscreen. There were all ages of people. The beaches were all different. We floated past the big spire for photos. The schedule is very accurate, meaning, we were back to the dock at 5 sharp, and as I said, the time at the beaches was so well-timed that just as I was 'done' swimming and relaxing, they would round everyone up to move on. They know their business.
Thanks, both of you, for being on this thread. Really helpful to correspond. Oh, Jessica, if you'd be willing to check out your CC statement, that would be great. I will look on Trip Advisor, too. And have a great trip, valadelphia!
