Has anyone been to Sardinia? Would it be a good place for a honeymoon? Where are some good places to stay in Sardinia?
Sardinia has a really rugged interior and rather sterile cities and towns. There's a good bit of paleo and neolithic stuff if you like old rocks.
I wouldn't classify it as a place with a lot of charm.
It wouldn't be my choice for a honeymoon.
It sounds like you might have pulled it out of a hat. :)
Reach in there again and see if you can find something called Corsica. You'd probably enjoy that.
My husband and I did a trip to Sardinia, driving a circle around the island. We had a wonderful time. The scenery was rugged and attractive, the villages were pleasant, the people in them were friendly (very little English spoken). We didn't care as much for the larger cities--bustly and annoying to drive in.
But even though we enjoyed this trip, I have to say I wouldn't choose it for a honeymoon.
Sardinia for a honeymoon? Perhaps, with a LOT of research to find a suitable smallish upscale resort with lots of charm and not geared to either the "jet set" or families. The problem, however, is that the vast majority of properties ARE geared either to the "jet set", families with children on summer holidays, or are not particularly "upscale" and suitable for honeymooners.
If you like towns along the sea with some charm, the partrician Villa Las Tronas in Alghero might be a very good fit (it was good enough for the last King of Italy), but probably not in July or August, when Alghero gets overrun with roudy northern Europeans with proclivities for binge drinking.
Costa Smeralda is very beautiful, to be sure, but most of the really good properties there are geared toward the "jet set", and are also extraordinarily expensive.
Cala Gonone (eastern coast, Province of Nuoro, near Dorgali) might be a better place for a honeymoon (much more secluded). Check out: www.hotelcalaluna.com. Also: www.hotelcostadorada.it
In the south of the Island, with its many gorgeous beaches, many of the properties are geared towards upscale family travellers (with lots of screaming kids), but with some research, you might find a suitable place for honeymooners (e.g. Hotel Stella Maris in Villasimius).
As a general rule, for honeymooners, I would avoid any hotel which advertises activities for children or "evening entertainment" with singing and dancing (since it's geared towards families), certainly if it has more than 100 rooms. Honeymooners usually look for "chateau-relais" type properites with a restaurant
