I want to travel from Rome to Sardinia mid-september but not sure the best way to get there (air or ferr) or where to go (Alghero, Olbia, Costa Smerlda)? do we rent a car? book hotel(s) ahead? We'll (a couple in our 30's) have about 4 or 5 nights to spend in Sardinia. Thanks in advance.

Alison, the question is what is your destination prior to Sardegna/Sardinia and where do you want/need to go next. Ryanair serves Alghero from London, Frankfurt and other major cities in Europe. Sardegna Ferries and Moby Lines connect the island with mainland Italy by boat, including with La Spezia in Cinque Terre. Personally I love the boat ride as it's almost like some mini cruise. But it's very time consuming and not necessarily cheaper than air. I recommend you rent a car on the island as under public transport it is not understood the same there as in many other countries.
