Sardinia…I’m looking for transportation from Alghero to Cagliari on Saturday October 12,2024. I’m not sure I feel comfortable traveling solo with a rental car in a foreign country. Hotel quote for a driver was €350… More than the flight to get there from Europe. I’m making inquiries to see if it’s a competitive rate.
Any suggestions how to locate a driver, Or advice about driving in Sardinia Or other helpful suggestions would be most welcome.
Driving in Sardinia is relatively easy as long as you know the traffic laws and have an International Drivers Permit (available at AAA.) In April 2019 I flew into Olbia and spent a week visiting various locations. I drove from Alghero to Cagliari a day ahead to catch my flight to Sicily. It was an easy drive, partially on a two land road inland to the main North/South autostrada. Not lot of traffic and I never felt stressed or anxious.
I wouldn’t visit Sardinia without renting a car.
If you live in Reno NV I’m sure you are familiar with driving around Lake Tahoe. Driving in Sardinia is not any different (lots of two lane highways with curves). Traffic is generally limited outside of cities.
The country is foreign but the road signs are symbols from the International Road Signage system, not really that hard.

If all you need to do is go from Alghero to Cagliari, then you can take trains and buses and be there in less than 5 hours.
However if you plan to visit Sardinia a car is highly advised. Driving in Sardinia is not difficult at all, I’ve done so many times.
The drive from Alghero to Cagliari takes half as long as using public transport, it is only 150 miles and can be easily done in less than 3 hours since it is virtually all of it on a 4 lane divided freeway not dissimilar to the freeways near your home.
Regarding returning the car in Cagliari, I suggest you return it at the airport to avoid city traffic. From the freeway, driving to the airport couldn’t be any easier. Just before reaching Cagliari, take the exit AEROPORTO on the freeway and then it is a straight 4 lane expressway to the airport. It will be easier than returning a car at the Reno airport.
