Santa Maria Novella to Chiusi Railway Station Questions

Hi All,

Trying to get train tickets on Trenitalia. But when I search this route I get this message.

Urban transport (not included in the price) from Firenze SM Novella to Firenze Rifredi

I am confused. Does that mean you have to take a bus to another train station along the way??

The train you are looking at skips SMN station. It is an IC train that starts at Milano Centrale, to Bologna, to Prato, and its only stop in Florence is Rifredi station, so you have to get there from SMN. Why not take an unreserved regionale that goes from SMN to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme? Takes almost the same amount of time.

Not sure where you are looking at.

from SANTA MARIA NOVELLA
To CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO TERME
Select a date, but for now select a date next week, since I don’t think they loaded the June timetable yet. It won’t change much.
You will find plenty of solutions, for the most part with no changes with either a REGIONALE or a REGIONALE VELOCE (RV) train. No need to go to RIFREDI station unless you are going to catch an Intercity (IC) there. It costs more money and you save no time with the IC.

He must be using a day of travel after June 11, this way trenitalia.com does not displays Regionale trains, either from SMN to Rifreddi or from Florence to Chiusi.

Just wait early June before buying your tickets.

Thanks everyone! I understand, obviously it's my first trip to Italy so I have no clue what I'm doing.

So I can just catch a regional train from SM Novella and I don't have to worry about having no occupancy?

Thanks Again!

The regional trains heading to Chiusi all originate at SMN, so show up a half hour early and buy your ticket, then validate your ticket and board the train as soon as it is spotted on the platform. You'll be among the first on board and will have your pick of seats.

PS There is liable to be long lines at the ticket windows, Florence being a tourist town, so use the ticket machines with a credit card. Second thought, since it is your first time in Italy, maybe buy it the day before to practice. Just remember, the Italian name for the city is Firenze. Tickets bought this way are "open" tickets, so you must validate them in the stamping machines on the platform just before boarding the train. Failure to do this will get you fined.

Thanks a lot Sam!
That's the attention to detail I needed. I will just buy it the day before.

Yes I have the Trenitalia App and it's easy to use!

I bought all my regional train tickets online a couple days before going to Italy. I would do that again as it saved the trouble of doing it in Italy.
