We will be in Rome on the first Sunday of September. We are interested in seeing the Caravaggio paintings and Bernini sculptures at the Santa Maria del Popolo. I understand they have mass at multiple times on Sunday, but I am having a difficult time figuring out what hours if any the church might be open for tourists. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks!
You can try santasusanna.org for hours and Mass times.
San Luigi dei Francesi (between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona) has several Caravaggio works.
Two guidebooks I looked at said the Church was open 8 to 1.30 on Sundays but A quick look at the church's website shows mass is said at 8, 10, 11, 12 and 6.30 with no visiting during services. Most churches, like the rest of Rome close from 1.00 to 4.00, so it would appear you have a 2-hour window of opportunity between 4 and 6. I could only get the Italian site, the English one wasn't working.
Sorry not really have been much help!
Does it have to be on Sunday? My notes from February show it's open daily 7.30-12.30 and 4.00-7.00, and all day onh Friday/Saturday. There's a Bernini in front of San Luigi too.
It does need to be Sunday unfortunately. I have seen most of the other Caravaggio paintings in Rome, but the last time I was there the lights for these paintings were not working properly. I was not able to view them, so I would like to give it another try. Our other activities are not near Piazza del Popolo, and I amn trying to avoid making multiple trips to that area by figuring out in advance a time that would be suitable for a tourist visit.
