How long does it take by train. We were thinking about staying in Santa Margherita Liguere and traveling back and forth by train to Cinque Terre each day (for two days). We did not want to stay in Cinque Terre. Please advise . Thank you.
Probably about an hour, more if you need to make a connection. There's one direct regional train in the morning - I took it from Camogli (the next stop north) last May. See http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en to check the schedules.
You can look up train times (and buy tickets if necessary, in this case it isn't necessary as they are cheap regionalle tickets) on the Italian Railways website: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
- The station in Santa Margherita Liguere is called S. Margherita Ligure-Portofino.
- Cinque Terre is, as the name suggests, an area with five towns, each with their own station: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore
- Trains from S. Margherita Ligure-Portofino to the Cinque Terre run every hour stopping at all 5 stations. The trip takes 49 minutes to Monterosso and costs €4.90 (info from Trenitalia website).
We did this last summer and it worked out very well for us. We based ourselves in beautiful Santa Margherita Liguere for 4 nights and took 3 day trips including the train to Cinque Terre one day, an easy bus to Camogli another day and a fabulous walk on the new "red carpet" to Portofino on our last day.
