Santa Croce area of Florence

Has anyone stayed near Santa Croce in Florence? Rick doesn't have any recommendations for this area in his book, curious why. trying to find a location somewhat quiet in Florence is a challenge. Two well travelled adults and a 17 year old, first time outside the US. Thank you in advance.

If RS doesn’t recommend it, it is a good sign. It means that it will be less crowded and less expensive. He probably doesn’t recommend it because it is a bit more distant from the major sights. I presume he doesn’t recommend too many places in San Frediano either, for the same reason.

If you don’t mind the extra walk to the sights, which are closer to the San Giovanni district, It is actually a great place to stay, less touristy and more local, especially closer to Piazza Sant’Ambrogio. Some great restaurants too in that area. Check booking.com or Airbnb or VRBO for accommodations. I’ve never stayed in Santa Croce (I prefer to stay in the neighborhood where I grew up, outside the city center), but I’m sure you can find one to your liking.

I think Santa Croce would be a good choice, as would somewhere in the Oltrarno district. We stayed one year near Piazza della Passera and really enjoyed that neighborhood.

Santa Croce is my favorite area to stay in Firenze! Especially (as Roberto mentioned) for the sant' Ambrogio market...the best fresh food. SO many great restaurants, shops and cool pop up markets in the squares. The train station is only about a 15-20 minute walk but I also love taking the bus...there is a Conad supermarket in the neighborhood which I frequently visited. The church is beautiful with the leather school just behind it. I always enjoyed just getting a yummy gelato and sitting in the piazza an hour or so just to people watch. Nice neighborhood. Enjoy!
