I have booked a stay at the Hotel Canal Grande in Santa Croce, right near the Santa Lucia Train Station. We only have 1.5 days in Venice. Does this put us too far away from all of the major sights? Thanks!!

Venice is not large and easily walkable, the location is just fine.

If by major sites you mean San Marco etc. then you are at the wrong end of the Island. However, they are easily reachable by Vaporetto or by walking. It should take maybe 45 minutes to walk from the station to San Marco (depends on pauses for coffee, window shopping etc). Its about the same length of time by vaporetto.

Allison, try using Google Maps satellite view. I'm looking and see you are only a 15 minute boat ride from St. Mark's. Perfect way to see the Grand Canal. NOTHING to fret over.
