San Miniato as a base for exploring Tuscany

I am beginning to think about next year's pilgrimage to Italy and I was thinking of spending a week in Tuscany, but not basing in Florence. We will fly open jaw into Pisa and home from Roma. So, I was thinking about staying in San Miniato. This is only tentative, so we are open for suggestions. After Tuscany we will be heading south to maybe Nusco outside of Avellino in Campagnia then back to the Castelli Romani. Tanti grazie piu in avanti, Buon Viaggio, RB

If you are looking to explore both Tuscany and Umbria, Cortona is an excellent base for doing this, as it is located right in the center of these two regions. The town also has great restaurants and an excellent atmosphere. San Miniato can work as a decent base for solely Tuscany as it can give you relatively close access to towns like Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Siena, Prato, Pistoia, and the Chianti region, which can all be worth visits. San Miniato is a peasant town in itself with an excellent duomo and a nice view from atop; didn't really get a huge grasp of atmosphere though, and haven't gotten a chance to sample restaurants. But.. Either way, enjoy your travels!

Stuart peasant or pleasant? :) I think San Miniato is an interesting choice - they host a huge truffle festival in November. You can get to many places from there, but you will be driving every day (which I assume if part of your plan).
