You just take the regular vaporetto service towards Murano (I forget the number) and get off at the cemetery.
Then you just go for a wander. It's worth looking up notable graves, eg Diaghilev, in advance.
There are toilets, but no other facilities.
It's a special place.
Thank you Lin C
All I saw was costly tours to this Island; would much rather explore on my own.

Check the times the cemetery is open/closed and ferry schedule as ferry is not as frequent as you might think. This way you can time your visit to the ferry schedule.
I suppose the costly tours have a guide that will take you to all the graves of famous people. Igor Stravinsky is another that comes to mind.
Thank you all,
Jean
List of important people buried in the cemetery:
We ended up there by pretty much by accident when we were planning to go to Murano. The vaporetto was overcrowded and we decided to get off.
It was interesting to wander around. There were people visiting graves and we always kept a respectful distance.
Thanks again all, this forum is great!

I always recommend it to people planning to visit Venice. It's a beautiful, evocative place with a ton of history; as you can see from the link above. In particular as the main island gets more crowded, I really appreciate the relative quiet of the the "out islands" to recharge my batteries.
