I wonder if you're referring to the area that's blocked off for the restoration that's going on in Piazza San Marco? Did you look at the webcam recently and this "stage" was not there at all? Or is this the first time you've looked at the webcam and you're wondering what the heck is going on with that structure?

Which webcam did you visit?

The stage is being constructed for a rare but necessary public flogging. Italy's World Cup team will assembled and punishment handed out for their exit from the first round, and loss of the WC trophy.

Also, I would like to make the following statement:
For the next four years the USA is officially better at soccer than Italy, France, and England.

Margaret,

Concerts usually take place all over Italy in the summertime, so that's probably why the stage is being built in Piazza San Marco. I'm not sure which concert this one will be?

The "current weather" won't provide much of an indication on what conditions will be like in Lago di Como or the Dolomites in 16-days. I've found on past trips that the weather in early September will probably be nice for the most part, but it's a good idea to plan for some rain and cooler evenings.

Cheers!

And yes The USA were brilliant this year..STILL the question
Makes ya wonder what the stage is for ???

I use www. wunderground.com for weather information. You can type in the city you're looking for and you'll get current weather as well as a 10 day forecast. During my recent trip to Europe, I think this was the most accurate site.

I was on the Venice connected webcam. Well if it is not a stage then it looks pretty darn big!!
Pat ( ohhhh I hope it is a stage for a specticular event not an " please excuse our dust " :)

We were there two weeks ago and were very disappointed at St. Marks square. There was a HUGE stage on the west side of the square by the Correr Museum. There was a ten foot high metal fence surrounding the Campanile and the north facade of St. Marks is covered in scafolding. My plan was to sit at the Florian and enjoy my $$ cup of cafe while listening to the music. No way I was going to do that and look at the construction. I opted for a $ cup of gelato and sat on the stairs instead.

The opening act for the flogging will be the French national team...

Ah, scaffolding. The scourge of the traveler...I have a photo album FULL of scaffolding. "The Scaffolding Tour of 2001".

Pat, it looks like the construction area - they're doing a lot of work in the Square. Last I saw, the Bell Tower was dressed like the Leaning Tower of Pisa :-/ I'm all for cute and irreverant, but how about a photo of the Bell Tower?!? Lower your expectations of the romantic plazas and famed buildings - they're covered in scaffolding! Be pleasantly surprised if they aren't.

It was faster in the old days, when they just burned a losing futbol team at the stake.

All that scaffolding is the curse of having so many old buildings that constantly need restoration. Can you imagine how much that's costing the government?

But the webcam angle is a little misleading as it's showing only a little tiny bit of the huge square. You can go to Google Maps, type in Venice St. Mark's Square and see a photo that shows the actual size of this staging area in comparison to the entire huge plaza. The staging area and fencing is only at the base of the bell tower, and only on one side of that.

BTW, I love your typo of "Lake Coma". That's where we went first on our first trip to Italy. It took us a good three days on "Lake Coma" to recover from the jet lag. :-)

Those are shipping/storage containers that are surrounding a construction/restoration area around the campanile. If they do set a stage up it is usually at the opposite end of Piazza San Marco from the basilica.

Ahhhh yes Lake 'Coma' that is where I will be combing the area for George!! Surely there won't be all that construction during the Regatta???
Thanks for the weather links

That construction has been there for months and months and will likely continue to be there through the early September regatta. That part of St. Mark's is not a viewing area for the regatta, so it won't have any effect.

In June of 2009 we were in St.Marks Square, and that huge concert stage was already set up and ready. They were set to have a series of concerts for the 1st week in July, including Andrea Bocelli. It's temporary.

Margaret, hands off George Clooney; he's all mine!! LOL. We were in Italy last September & unfortunately we did encounter rain in the Cinque Terre and in Lake Como right around the middle of the month. Luckily, it passed within a few days and the rest of the time the weather was glorious. Definitely take a light-weight rain jacket & an umbrella & dress in layers. Have a fantastic trip.

Ray is confusing two different things. The staging area around the bottom of the belltower is for the ongoing restoration and is long term (although technically temporary). The stages that get set up for concerts happen at the opposite end of the large piazza and are gone within a day or two.
