My wife and I (mostly I) are considering checking out San Marino as we vagabond through Italy by car. We would probably make San Marino a one night stopover in between Venice and Florence. It looks like you can either drive through Bologna or straight over the mountains. Has anyone driven the mountain route from San Marino to Florence? How would you describe the drive? We would be doing this in the 3rd week of March so one consideration would be the weather in the mountains.
Have never done the drive but speaking from general experience.......it's shorter as the crow flies but once you're off the autostrada you're going to be on smaller roads at a reduced rate of speed, possibly going through tiny towns with lights and local traffic, if you happen to get behind farm vehicles or trucks it can be hard to pass, get into those mountain roads they can be twisty and narrow etc etc. The weather...I would usually say you would'nt have to worry about snow by that time but considering our current fluke weather who knows.....but you could get rain/fog which would also slow you down considerably. If you're looking for faster stick with the autostrada...more scenic, try that route.
Thanks, Ron. We'll see how we feel and what the weather looks like.
