Okay--choices choices. Spending 15 days in Italy--four of which will be in Imola at the f1 race but meeting friends who never visited Italy. Definitely after exploring Motor Cities ..want to do a day trip to either Verona or San Marino before heading to Tuscany for couple days. Then contemplating Cinque Terra --working our way to Geneva to fly out. Appreciate insight/feedback. thanks!
San Marino is interesting and from Imola it's a short drive, however Verona is more important, in my opinion.
Spend 16 minutes watching this video of San Marino, then go to Verona: https://youtu.be/nKAptNKjwz0
Stayed in Verona and love it. It is easy to go back and forth by train and car. Very safe. Good luck.
San Marino has some pretty views and and enjoyable walk but to me it is just saturated with tourists since it is such a small area. More areas to explore in Verona beyond the city center and you can cross the river to see some more sites.
If you go to San Marino it tends to be packed with tourists on weekends. Lots of day trippers from the area, especially in summer. However if you go around the F1 Grand Prix (end of May) the beach towns are still empty as it is low season, therefore there will be few tourists on weekdays. Also that coastal area is generally very popular with Russian tourists who haven’t showed up this past year, since the start of the Ukrainian war. I liked San Marino, and went there often in my youth when I was 18, but it was mostly because I had a San Marinese girlfriend, my first foreign girlfriend from another country.
San Marino could be a nice daily stopover while from Imola you are driving south to Tuscany. There are even some very scenic route that a car lover should enjoy. You can visit the Marco Simoncelli museum or pass in Tavullia for the Valentino Rossi fan club that day.
Verona is a city and stay there for a night is a perfect solution, or you can use it as a base to explore the western Veneto.
