San Marino

Interested in San Marino. I’d like some comments from someone who has been there, also is it easy to get there. Any replies appreciated. If we go it will be in September

Dropped in to the Citta, April last year for about 4 hours. It was a convenient stop as we drove from Venice to San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore.

Was a cold drizzly day. Wandered around. Had cake and coffee in a café.

Easy to get to with our cars. Plent of parking. A well signed ZTL area that even Mr Magoo should not have missed.
It was an enjoyable stop. A sunny day would have been better.

I did San Marino as a day trip from Ravenna via Rimini using buses over a decade ago. It was a long day, but really worthwhile. The tourist office even put a commemorative stamp in our passports. If you have time in your schedule, by all means go.

We drove there last fall from Assisi and spent one night. Parking was super easy right outside the walls. It was a nice place to visit, and felt one day was enough. The view from up there was spectacular. We were standing in the piazza at the Palazzo Pubblico (city hall) looking at a car with license plate SM002. This belongs to one of the two Captains Regent (Heads of State). I noticed a guard come out of city hall and salute to a car that was parked in front with the license plate SM001, and as it drove right past us, the person inside waved. It was thrilling as it was the closest we have gotten to a country’s leader.

I’ve been many times (even had a Sanmarinese girlfriend in youth) and was nearby yesterday but decided not to go up. Took my wife and sister in law to Gradara to visit the beautiful Castle instead. If you’ve never been it’s an interesting day trip. A few hours will be enough. I’ve always driven, but there are several buses that go up from the Rimini train station. One of the companies is Bonelli bus. Never used it but I presume it’s easy. If you drive and have maybe a couple of days at your disposal, consider visiting both Gradara and San Leo. They are nearby and they are two hill towns not to miss.

San Leo can be reached by bus from Rimini station, with the Start Romagna bus line. Gradara can also be reached by Start Romagna bus but from the Cattolica train station (a bit south of Rimini).
