I'm planning our northern Italy trip and wondering if anyone has visited San Marino. If so, what did you love about it and how long would you suggest? Thanks!
I’ve been several times when I was living in Italy, but only a couple of times since I moved Stateside, last time I think in 2015. The views from Mt. Titano are gorgeous, and the Guaita fortress interesting and the historical part inside the walls is quaint. Be aware that it gets overwhelmed with tourists in summer from the nearby beach towns, especially day trippers on weekends. Lots of souvenir shops selling junk. Everything can be visited in a few hours.
As the previous poster said, a few hours.
We did a day trip to San Marino and didn’t find it worth the drive. As Roberto wrote, tons of tourists and souvenir shops. Enjoyed visiting Urbino much more.
San Leo is nearby and much less touristed. More scenic too.
If you happen to go and you have a car, besides beautiful medieval San Leo, see if you can visit nearby Castle of Gradara. Besides being the place where the love story of Paolo and Francesca took place (described in Dante’s 5th Canto of the Inferno), it is also famous for being the place used as a residence by the Borgias (if you saw the Netflix series).
