San Marino and Points Northwest

Hello,

I will be driving northwest from Urbino, ending up in Turin. I have two big questions, each with a sub-question.

(1) Is San Marino worth a stop? If so, is it better to visit early in the day or late?

(2) The trip between San Marino and Turin (or Urbino if I skip San Marino) takes about five hours. I'd prefer to break it up, staying overnight someplace. Is there a good small-town worth a visit? I'm thinking Emilia-Romagna or Liguria (Tuscany and Lombardy might take me out of the way).

Thanks,

William

I think San Marino is worth a stop and so is Gradara and San Leo, two fortresses medieval villages nearby. However you probably don't need to stay overnight as each would take just a few hours. Also the RSM and the above villages are very close to Urbino and therefore you are not breaking the trip in exactly half way. About half way is Parma, in case you are interested. Not that small but pretty. Both Tuscany and Liguria would be a significant detour. The most direct itinerary goes through Bologna, Parma Piacenza, Alessandria, therefore nowhere in Liguria or Tuscany.
